Club run on March 17th 2024

Tuesday, March 12, 2024 by Jon Clayton
We will now be meeting at Kholo Gardens at 9.30am for a morning tea hosted by Madonna Shelley.

We will then proceed to Gatton to arrive at 12pm for the Lunch at the QLD Museum of Transport

Club runs on 17th March 2024

Saturday, March 02, 2024 by Jon Clayton
Hi - the Early Falcon Car Club of Queensland has a planned club run to Colleges Crossing with a morning tea put on by Madonna Shelley and then onto the QLD Transport Museum at Gatton for Lunch

The QAFV8 club has invited the EFCCQ members to join them on a run from the Bundamba Servo to Toowoomba and then onto the Highfields Pioneer Village with a sausage lunch and entry to the Motor museum for $40

As discussed in the club meeting held on 27th February it was decided to put it to the club members whether they wanted to go to the original EFCCQ run or join the QAFV8 club run

please comment below which event you would like to attend

  • Comment by Jon Clayton on Friday, March 01, 2024: I am for going to the original EFCCQ event at Colleges Crossing

  • Comment by Graeme & Theresa on Saturday, March 02, 2024: Happy to stay with our club run to Gatton.

  • Comment by Peter Stanley on Sunday, March 03, 2024: Colleges crossing and Gatton

  • Comment by Sharyn and Al on Sunday, March 03, 2024: We love colleges crossing it brings back memories of old family days swinging on the ropes from the trees above the bull sharks. And sausages cooked on sticks around the fire. Looking forward to it.

  • Comment by Jack Shelley on Monday, March 04, 2024: I am happy to go on either run, however, if we get less than 10 cars to the EFCCQ event then we will scrap it. There is too much work for others to put on these events to have no one show up.

  • Comment by Noel & Mandy O'Driscoll on Monday, March 04, 2024: It’s morning tea for us. Madonna does a great morning tea & good company of our club members. We can always go to Kholo gardens if Colleges is closed. I have found for me personally that sometimes less members is more personal & you get to chat & interact with more of the members so might still be worth considering if only a few members attend.

  • Comment by Jon Clayton on Monday, March 04, 2024: I am with Noel, If we determine that Colleges Crossing is not accessible we should try for Kholo Gardens.

*** Important information for those on special registration ***

Monday, January 09, 2023 by Jon Clayton
If you are planning an "impromptu car run"

To enable you to drive your car that is on special registration YOU MUST BE A CURRENT FINANCIAL MEMBER of the club

You must post an event BEFORE you leave.

    This event post must include,
    Your name
    Your vehicle registration number
    Start date of impromptu event
    Starting location
    Finishing location

If the event is over more than one day you have to complete a new impromptu event for each day.

Please enter your Impromptu car run event under the Events section to the left of the main page. This will make our main page less cluttered. You can choose to make the event visible to members only.

  • Comment by Rebecca and Darran McCutcheon on Sunday, January 08, 2023: Thanks Jon will do that next time. Didn't realise all that information was required. Would you please let me know where I find my membership number? I don't have a membership card but am a current financial member

  • Comment by Jon Clayton on Sunday, January 08, 2023: Have sent it your email address, cheers

  • Comment by Jim Beh on Friday, January 13, 2023: Hi Jon.I too am a financial member but have not received a membership card. So do not know my membership number.

  • Comment by Jon Clayton on Saturday, January 14, 2023: Hi Jim, if you can attend one of our club runs or club meetings we can hand you your membership card for 2022/2023. Your membership number is(47714047.

  • Comment by Jack Shelley on Saturday, January 14, 2023: Is the club handing out membership cards for everyone. If we have to write this every time we go on a drive it would be handy to have it close.

  • Comment by neil mcallister on Saturday, January 14, 2023: do I have a membership no.?

  • Comment by Jon Clayton on Saturday, January 14, 2023: Hi everyone, all members have a membership number. To receive your current 2022/2023 membership card, please attend a club run or a club meeting.

  • Comment by Ecio and Rosalia Norbido on Sunday, January 15, 2023: Hello Neil, yes you too have a membership no. It's 47713962. Cheers

  • Comment by Col Aston on Monday, January 16, 2023: I'll join the crew. I never received a membership card either. Am I still a member? I've paid my money every year.

  • Comment by Jim Beh on Tuesday, January 17, 2023: I would suggest that the membership cards be mailed to all members and I think most members would agree with me on that. Not everyone is able to attend meetings or go on runs - very difficult for me living in Toowoomba.

  • Comment by Ecio and Rosalia Norbido on Thursday, January 19, 2023: Hello Col, yes you are still a member. Thank you for your prompt payment every year. The membership cards were introduced about 2 months ago. At that time, the committee felt that to encourage members to try and attend a meeting or run, that pick up of the card was the way to do that. We will endeavour to remedy the issue as soon as possible. Cheers, Rosalia

Wanted 1972 car for a photo shoot

Saturday, July 17, 2021 by Sharyn and Al
Mitchelton Meals on Wheels Assn. Inc. (MITMOW) management committee to ask if any of your Members owns or has access to a 1972 sedan or station sedan.
Towards the end of this year (November or December) MITMOW will achieve the preparation and delivery of its 1.5 millionth meal since its inception in 1972.

To mark this celebration, we intend to make a special meal delivery to a selected Client. We will engage the services of a special guest from the political or television/radio sphere.

The local newspaper media will be invited to cover the occasion. To enhance the impact of the milestone, the Committee would like to deliver the meal in a 1972 vehicle. The idea would be to have the special guest plus a MITMOW member and a member of the media transported to the Client’s house to make the delivery. There would be photo opportunities and reports in the local media.

MITMOW would be very appreciative if one of your members could be in a position to help deliver the meal to our Client on this very significant occasion.
I have attached a photo of our one millionth meal delivery as it appeared in the North West News in September 2007 to give you an idea of what is planned.

    Xp Falcon 4 door

Tuesday, August 04, 2020 by James Stewart Salisbury
Hi as my plans have changed I am thinking of getting rid of my 1965 XP falcon i have had for nearly 30 years. It was a daily runner back in the 90s but really it has sat idle for the last 20 years and probably done less than 500K in that time. It has new 250 motor and 3 speed auto, diff was reconditioned, brakes all done, but nothing really done to her for quite a while except charging the battery and starting her. i did recently fit a larger electric fan to the radiator. My question is what do you think it would be worth now. Thanks for your help Stewart

Hi everyone, sorry to have missed you all yesterday at the club meeting but I had family commitments. just a reminder that the run to Highfields historical village is on, we are heading up there Sunday 23rd September. I propose meeting at the puma servo around 9 ish to leave at 9:30, taking the scenic route through Esk and up to Highfields. The organisers up at Highfields have asked for possible numbers so they can make sure they have enough catering and also we will get a tour guide to take us through the village. Can anyone interested in coming express interest via the club website so I can get an idea of numbers. Non members or persons interested in joining the club are welcome to come along.
Thanks all hope to see many of you there.

Club run to Highfields Pioneer Village

    Friday, August 10, 2018 by Noel & Mandy O'Driscoll
Hi everyone. I’m going to organise a club run to Highfields Pioneer Village up at Toowoomba, looking at either Saturday 22 September or Sunday 23rd. I’ve been up there before and it’s an excellent day out very interesting to see how early Aussie’s lived, and if there is enough of us they will organise a tour and start up the old machinery for us.
Food and beverage are available there and prices are reasonable. They open at 10 so it’s not a real early day.
Can I get some feedback on what you guys feel to see if it’s a worthwhile effort.
    Cheers Noelzie

  • Variety Bash donation

Thursday, August 09, 2018 by Sharyn and Al
In two weeks, Nathan will be undertaking the 2018 Variety Bash from Gladstone to Townsville. His team goal is to raise over $10,000 to help support the amazing activities that Variety does to assist and support children throughout Queensland.

Can we support as a generous sponsor for the Rocket XP in 2018?

See how the Variety Bash works, and the great work of Variety in Queensland!

For a small Tax Deductible donation of $250.00 or more, not only will you be able to support the work that Variety does but also:
Your branding will be prominently displayed for 12 months on the Rocket XP
The opportunity to use the Rocket XP with your branding for corporate events
A calendar with photos of the Rocket XP on the Bash to help you remember your valued contribution
Knowing that you are helping the sick and disadvantaged kids all around Queensland
You can sponsor online through our Everyday Hero page --> https://2018varietybash.everydayhero.com/au/BashCarNASA

Feel free to personally donate or your company or work place to make a donation to Variety.
Encourage Nathan on Facebook or email.

    Turnout for Barefoot Bowls

Monday, August 10, 2015 by Gav And Sarah Grant
The barefoot bowls run at the Coorparoo Bowls Club was a good one. Fresh Taco's were on the menu and the cars were appreciated by a good crowd who were there for the sun and live music. Bowls was good and the bowlers improved as the day progressed.
Was great to see a good variety of much loved cars. See the pics
I also towed my caravan to Jacobs Well for a proving run overnight at the caravan park. Top little spot close to home. The XP towed well with the new Monroe pump-up shocks although the fuel gauge is buggered and gave me a short delay while I grabbed a can of juice for it. If anyone know how to fix a low reading gauge, please call me.

Sadly, due to some financial restructuring am moving to Victoria and I have to sell my remaining toy -(the XE Ghia went last year).
My XD is a stock standard 4.1 Alloy head auto. Only 49500kms on clock and it still feels tight. Even all door handles working OK!. Just did the trip to Bowdens today and it drove like new. I have just had RWC for put 6 mths rego. Air con freshly regassed on Friday. Will even include the PPQ Plates in price (XDI980). $6900 ono.
Have a look at what 60s-70s standard falcons are getting now, and as Dan Bowden said today its a better than investing in art!

Wayne (wanda@people.net.au) posted the following comment/question: Hi, great web site and your members have some great cars. I am in the middle of an XP coupe resto and have hit a brick wall with the rear windscreen. I thought I would not have as much trouble as I am trying to find one. Is it possible one of your members could point me in the right direction or would any of them have a rear windscreen. I am also after the trim for it. I have the upper sections but am still looking for the lower curves one. Any help is appreciated. Cheer's, Wayne.

  • Club Christmas Party

Thursday, October 03, 2013 by Duncan Beckerton

Last week at our monthly meeting we decided to look for a venue for this year’s Club Christmas party. This year instead of a BBQ with paper plates and flies, the members voted to have our party catered. We are looking for a venue (Hotel, football or Golf Club) where we can park our cars, safely and preferably in view, a venue where our members can enjoy a good meal maybe a buffett some music and somewhere for the kids and teens.
If you have a venue that you feel might suit the Early Falcon Car Club’s Christmas Party. Please call Duncan Beckerton EFCC Secretary on 0433601145

  • Tivoli Drive in (Please open the PDF)

Saturday, September 28, 2013 by Duncan Beckerton
RIGHT Now-the Tivoli Drive ln Theatre urgently needs your help. Tivoli Drive ln along with 1000's of cinemas around the world uses 35mm movies. However, with the advancement of digital cinema technology, Hollywood has made the decision
to stop releasing movies in 35mm format. The choice is to "go digital or go dark". Already a
number of popular family movie titles are no longer available in 35mm and from December 2013
we have been advised there will be none at all.
lndependent theatres across the world are being forced to close because they simply can't
afford the switch to digital, and if we don't install a new digital projector we will have no new movies to show. We will be forced to close !
It will cost S1OO,OO0 to purchase and install a new digital projector powerful enough to project
the image onto our giant 32 x L5m drive in screen'
We're asking for your support to help keep our Drive ln open.

  • Early Ford Grill Badges

Thursday, September 26, 2013 by Paul Devisser
    Hi All,
Some whom attended Tuesday's meeting would have seen the grill badges we developed in Cad and cut out by laser in Stainless Steel. These took a while to develop but now that we have the artwork we can cut them out of any thing or any size. We can also add to the artwork differences for new future events. We are open to suggestion and given enough leadtime can cut anything for the club. The current grill badges displayed at the meeting are $25.00 each and will need to be cut upon request. They can be painted any color you wish and will not rust as they are Stainless Steel. With a bit of work they can also be polished. To order these please email me at p020756@gmail.com. I have attached a view of the grill badge for everyone to see.

Pacific Ford Show is on again!

Thursday, July 04, 2013 by Nathan Johnston
It’s on again! A showcase of Ford’s Australian, European and American performance.
Venue: Pacific Ford and FPV, 122 - 124 Sugar Road Maroochydore 4558.
    When: Sunday 11th August, 2013 from 9am - 3pm.
“Total Performance” was the slogan of a Ford advertising campaign in the early to mid1960’s and was part of a directive by US Ford Chairman and grandson of the founder, Henry Ford ll, that Ford would be dominant in all forms of Motorsport it chose to enter.

    Pacific’s Show
The Pacific Ford and FPV Car Show on Sunday 11th August will honour Ford’s racing heritage with a collection of early models, classic muscle and the latest FPV models. This is a true blue Ford car show that allows both Ford Owners to get their Fords out and the Ford lovers to view, hear, and get up close to these fine Ford motor cars.

Sunday’s show is again planned to feature a wide spread of performance Fords from the latest FPV’s back to their early ancestors. We are currently building a list with a minimum 100 as the target. Mustang lovers will rejoice as collectors serve up a treat, they love to flex their Muscle Cars and again we should see plenty of “Stangs”. We are seeking the screaming UK 4’s, hot rods, and our Aussie Classics - simply, if it has a Ford Badge with any hint of performance, they will qualify. So if you know a Ford Fan make sure you let them know about this free Ford event.
Free show car bookings are open now for the event with the criteria simply being Ford and Performance.

The Show Car entry is available via; www.pacificfpv.com.au

It is free to have your show car on display at what is known as a well presented clean hard surface site with a bonus increase in our display area this year and in such good Ford lov’in company – where we display and sell today’s latest model Fords.
The dyno will be running! Shane Radaich from SC Performance & Dyno will be operating the dyno on the day. This is a two wheel Dyno, MAX 1,000hp $60 per car for two runs. You get a dyno horsepower/kilowatt and torque print out and an air fuel ratio print out. Simply contact Shane on 0419 487 457 or scperformancedyno@hotmail.com for further details and to book your dyno run.

If you have any questions on the show please contact Greg Manchester on 5458 9715 or 0419 715 257 otherwise mark down Sunday 11th August to be at Pacific Ford and FPV to enjoy the 2013 Total Performance Car Show Day and get those show car entries in!

    Modification Laws

Monday, March 25, 2013 by Chris Wain
Hi, I have been led to believe modification regulations will be changing at the end of the month, no longer allowing early falcons to be mod plated with V8's? Can someone confirm this?
If so, after a 10 year build for my ute I am a little unnerved. Can anyone put me onto someone to inspect and do the mod plate? Any guidance would be appreciated.

  • Comment by James Stewart Salisbury on Sunday, March 24, 2013: Code of Practice: Light Vehicle Modifications

This code of practice has operated in Queensland since the early 1990s and was one of the first codes of practice for light vehicle modifications in Australia. Due to the introduction of the NCOP from 1 November 2012, the Code of Practice – Light Vehicle Modifications will be progressively phased out.

To ensure a smooth move to the NCOP, the department has allowed for a 6 month transition period. This means that until 30 April 2013, modifications to light vehicles that had commenced before the NCOP was introduced, can still be certified under the existing Code of Practice: Light Motor Vehicles.

Please note: From 1 May 2013, the Code of Practice: Light Motor Vehicles will no longer be an approved code of practice for vehicle modifications, and no Approved Person will have approval to issue certifications under this code of practice.

Vehicle owners who have been affected by the recent natural disasters and will not be able to complete their modifications before the transition period finishes on 30 April 2013, can apply to Transport and Main Roads for approval to certify their modification under the Code of Practice: Light Vehicle Modifications.

To make an application you must complete a Motor Vehicle Modification Application form (F1854) and submit it to:

Hi everyone. A man named Michael contacted me asking about brakes. He has a 1966 XP with factory fitted disks. He says there is secondary master cylinder that sits on top of the standard master cylinder to hold extra fluid. He also says the mechanic lost the lid off it, and he doesn't know where to get another. If anyone know anything about it, tell me and and I will pass it on to him.
    Thanks, Chris.

  • Comment by Nathan Johnston on Monday, May 21, 2012: I tried to get a replacement master cylinder a few years ago and couldn't. The one my mechanic bought turned out to be off a Mustang, and in the end I had to get the original reconditioned. Unfortunately they reconditioned the master cylinder but not the cap - so I have a nice, shiny master cylinder but an old rusty cap! If you find somewhere that sells them, would be interested in getting a spare to carry with on the Bash this year.

  • Comment by Merv Ferguson on Monday, May 21, 2012: Hi Chris, how you going.
There is a American web site I go onto to chase parts some times called falconregistry.com where some of our parts are the same as theirs eg XP--64/65/66 falcon/comet/mercury. Cheers...

  • Comment by Kev Mcvay on Monday, May 28, 2012: I'd even try Mustang Auto Parts at Bulimba.ph - 3399 6477. They sell bits for GT Falcons and you'll find a lot of early Mustang bits fit XP's certainly. I've swapped a few second hand bits onto our XP off my Mustang. They are generally cheaper than Rare Spares and carry stock. Every time I go to rare spares they tell me its 2weeks ex-Melbourne (hence the second hand swaps) Haven't bought any new parts for the XP yet.

  • Comment by chris carlin on Tuesday, May 29, 2012: Ok thanks Guys I'll pass it on to him.

  • Brisbane Club Run - 22 April 12

Monday, April 23, 2012 by Glenn Lyons
Hi fellow club members.... Today was my second run with this fine club and another great opportunity to get out and about with fellow car enthusiasts. The destination for today was intended to be Kingscliff Rotary Park for a picnic on this beautiful day. A technical hitch en-route changed the plans mid run.

Dave & family 71 XY GS
    Nathan & family 67 Mustang
Noel & his wife 84 XE
Eddie & John Yellow XB wagon
Glenn & fiona 64 XM coupe

Northside group assembled at their meeting point and proceeded to meet up with us southies and from there cruise on down to Kingscliff. Whilst we were all assembled at the southside meeting place the '67 'stang started hissing out of the top radiator tank. No wanting to take the risk at popping anything on route Nathan headed into the auto shop to get some radiator stop leak. By the time he had arrived back the 'ole pony girl had cooled down sufficiently so we hit the road Dave leading in the XY and Nathan following cautiously behind.

As diabolical luck would have it the Mustang temp gauge climbed to far in the wrong direction shortly after leaving for Kingscliff. An unexpected stop saw 5 guys standing around watching John ( first timer club run) us a beach towel to get the pressure out of the overheating Mustang. Alternate arrangements were made and we decided to head back to Beenleigh Park and have the picnic there instead. From there Nathan would arrange to get the car back home again. At least we would all still be together.

Ahhh the joys of classic motoring !!!

Once at the park we settled in to getting the kids fed and the adults watered..... A rival car club was in the same park...!! seems it was the Pontiac club with a rather sharp looking red GTO cruising past at about 120db just on idle....: )

With a good time being had by all and food shared and stories told it was time for us all to go our own way back home.

Please see attached word document for some happy snaps.

    Cheers
    Glenn

  • How to buy mechandise ??

Wednesday, March 28, 2012 by Colin Bray
Hello Clubbies. I raised the question last night 'is there a link to a price list of CLUB MERCHANDISE on our website'. I still cannot find it but was told it's there.

Can someone please point this out to me. Thanks.

  • Comment by Nathan Johnston on Wednesday, March 28, 2012: There is no link to the merchandise list. There was an attachment to a post at one stage that listed all the merchandise. As you're organising the merchandise now Colin, if you want to put a list together with an order form & email it to me I'll put it on the website & setup a link.

  • Comment by Colin Bray on Thursday, March 29, 2012: Cheers Nathan, thanks for that. It will need an update as stuff will change for sure. Once sorted I'll get something across to you. Do you know much about the availability of the EFC plates via PPQ. Is this still available. It's mentioned on the Merch form and I wondered whether it should still be there.
    Thanks again for your help.

Mag wheels for sale to fit XM/XP falcon

Thursday, February 09, 2012 by Dave Smith
Hi, I have removed these wheels from my XP and gone back to the old school look and thought I would offer them to the club member before I put them on Ebay next week. They are 7" x 17" mags with a 20mm offset. These are the widest wheels you will fit under the back end of the early Falcon. They will take a 225-245/45 x 17" tire. (a fairly common size for Fords and Holdens)
The rims are in great condition with no gutter scuffs or srapes. Wanting $600 for the set includes chrome wheel nuts. If you are interested give me a call. Dave Smith Ph.0428888244.
the wheels are at my home in Kenmore.

Tuesday, June 14, 2011 by Marty Sanderson
Law enforcement patrol cars in Queensland seem to be on the look-out for miscreants who have scurried over the state border.

For any one that lives outside of our great nation, Australia has a proud sporting culture.

For those who are unaware, this time of the year is unique in that Rugby League (The greatest game of all) runs a a three game series between the players whom originated from the Mighty state of Queensland (colour - Maroon ; mascot - the canetoad) and the meaker, hapless state of New South Wales (colour - an insipid shade of blue; mascot - the cockroach)

    USA Ford Ad

Thanks to Deb Wallis for sending this one in.

If you are not a Ford fan, that's ok, but please watch this commercial, it's not what you think, and it's one of the best ways to promote a product I've ever seen. Loved it, it touches the heart.*

This can put a tear in your eye

Ford has not accepted a penny from the government bailout and should be marketing their action. But in my mind they have chosen to take a higher road ...a road with class. Enjoy this to the very end.

Ford outdid themselves with this commercial.

    falcon sprint

I took this photo in San Francisco 3 years ago, just thought I'd put it up, though I think the Australian version is slightly classier.

  • Comment by Marty Sanderson on Sunday, March 27, 2011: Cool photo Chris,
64 & 65 Falcons are much loved in the States hey,
but because we didn't get this body shape here the first time I saw one I thought it was a Chrysler.

  • Comment by chris carlin on Sunday, March 27, 2011: Yeah, the panels are quite different, just the roof and windows give it away really.

  • Comment by Mark Leitch on Sunday, March 27, 2011: I'm a fan of this shape, a link between the early drooped nose XK-Ms and the XR-Y. I bought my 64 convertible about a year ago and love it.

  • Comment by Marty Sanderson on Sunday, March 27, 2011: I Really do like them too.
A young bloke who worked for my wife @ I bought a 64 Sprint Convertible back in the '90's, super cool car & a super effort on 17 year olds wages.
I have a picture of our daughter Erika when she was about 3 or 4 standing next to this car around at my shed, I'm pretty sure that this old Falcon gave her an interest in cars more than any her parents have owned.

  • Comment by chris carlin on Thursday, April 14, 2011: have to admit mark, I am pretty jealous of your convertible sprint

    Check this gem out.
    Steam powered XL Falcon.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJq2Hc_mXFI

  • Comment by Nathan Johnston on Thursday, March 31, 2011: The one thing they didn't mention is how long it takes from the time you start it until you can drive it? I assume you have to wait for it to build up pressure before you can drive- just like the old steam trains. Interesting concept. Wonder if anyone has been game to try it with an FG Falcon yet? ;-)

  • Comment by Marty Sanderson on Thursday, March 31, 2011: When I was a kid at school in the seventies they spoke of running cars on gas instead of petrol.
I used to spend most of the boring lessons drawing XA-XB Hardtops and T-Bucket Fords I remember one day in English drawing a Falcon station Wagon driven by me and a friend called Andrew that was powered exclusively by baked beans.
This concept car never got beyond the drawing board but it did earn kudos from my pimply & flatulent schoolmates.

Tata Air powered cars web address below.

  • Comment by Nathan Johnston on Tuesday, April 12, 2011: Thats cool .. very interesting. I like how many of the comments think of it as a zero emission car; but you still need energy (electicity from coal) to power the compressor to start the whole process - but much more efficient none the less. Would be interested to drive one and see what they are like...

    Brake Hose ruptured

Sunday, February 27, 2011 by James Stewart Salisbury
I was excited about taking the Xp to Southport tonight, but when getting her ready she blew a brake hose on the back axle. Its been a while since a bought a brake hose, can anyone advise me if they are still available off the shelf or do i need to get a custom. It is the hose from the rear body to the back axle, Thanks Stewart

    Attachment: Brake line.jpg

  • Comment by Marty Sanderson on Sunday, February 27, 2011: Hi Stewart,
Bought one off the shelf at Streets Auto Spares Arana Hills, last Oct.
there are lots of old Falcs & club members in our neighborhood, perhaps they keep a good stock of parts because there is more call for them over here but I don't think you will have any trouble.
    Cheers
    Marty

  • Comment by James Stewart Salisbury on Sunday, February 27, 2011: Thanks Marty, I ordered one from Auto Barn ($40.00)will be in Monday, nice that some parts are still available very easily. Cheers Stewart
  • Sick Mustang

Monday, January 31, 2011 by Colin Bray
I got a call from my father-in-law to come check out his Mustang Issue. The poor old girl has a sick 289.
Cold start fine - idles smoother than silk. Could sit a full glass on air filter and you wont spill a drop. Real nice.
First few min cold - fine - good acceleration. Then about 3-4 min and she looses one cylinder. 2 min later she loses another and she can barely get above 60. Really struggles with popping etc.
Back off for 30 sec and back comes a cylinder.
Park her back in the shed after a run. Idles fine - revs without hesitation like nothing is wrong.

I've pulled one lead at a time - can notice effect with all.
    Dizzy cap all good.
    Coil gets REAL Hot.

Thinking of swapping out the coil tomorrow. Do they partly fail ??

Any other tips would be nice. We could just take to her to a mechanic .. but where's the fun in that ??

    Any other suggestions??

  • Comment by Peter Fussell on Monday, January 31, 2011: G'day Col, assuming its running points rather than electronic ignition check the condensor too - there are some crook ones around at the moment.

  • Comment by Glenn Cuthbert on Thursday, February 03, 2011: Colin, these old girls have adjustable rockers even though they have hydraulic lifters, if they are to tight this exact thing will happen.
I would check and adjust them if needed.

    Brake Pipe Connections

Sunday, December 19, 2010 by Chris Wain
    Hi All,

I have fitted a girlock twin cylinder brake master cylinder, a remote vh40 booster and xb disk brakes to the front of my xp falcon. I have been unable to bleed the brakes properly. At present the front brakes connect through the rear reservoir on the master through the booster and the rear brakes are straight off the front reservoir of the master.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Comment by Marty Sanderson on Thursday, December 23, 2010: Hi Chris,
when you say Girlock is it the same twin master cylinder with one inch bore as the XT used?
  • Membership enquiries

Saturday, December 04, 2010 by Marty Sanderson
    Hi all,
as you probably guess we get a lot of enquiries from people interested in Falcons & joining our club, I had one such email request sent to us today & thought it might be interesting for you to read my reply.
(The person asked a question relating to perhaps out of a choice of two similar cars which one should he buy, same model-XM 2 door Hardtop one a Deluxe with all matching numbers or a Futura without matching numbers etc?

    REPLY

    Hi G*****,
Thanks for your interest in our club.
Whilst I myself have owned an XM Hardtop for over 20years & still think it is the best looking car Ford has ever produced in their 100 & something years you have asked for an opinion on what would be best for you.
Why not come along to our next meeting, you would rarely get the chance to chat with a group of people with a common interest but different opinions at any thing else but a meeting would you?
You didn't say where you lived but I would even suggest that a cheap flight & an overnight stay in Brisbane would just add to the fond memory of buying your old classic Falcon.
Let us know you are coming & I'll set something up so that you can chat to as many people as possible.
Just to let you know a little about us, We are pretty relaxed & social,

there is a large variety of members but you could sum us up as a predominantly male club that is family friendly,

many of the wives, girlfriends and kids of our older members are very much involved and are carblokes too.

we meet the last Tuesday of each month at TCB Tavern Oxley, Blunder Road Oxley (not the pub at the roundabout)

Whilst as a club we are not competitive at all, we do have 3 or 4 members who enter shows to win trophies,

some members are restorers, some modifiers, some drive originals and most are just drivers, we also have a couple of drag racers.

Come along to our next meeting or run & see if it suits.

    XP Diff questions

Tuesday, November 09, 2010 by Mark Wright
    Hi everyone,
I'm putting my XP Ute back on the road and along with the usual issues to get roadworthy (seals hardened up so leaking a bit) I'm considering puting a longer diff in it to give me some highway legs.
At the moment I believe I have the 4.0:1 commercial dff, as I get about 55 MPH at best but it has 4 studs all round. This seems to be in contradiction to the accepted wisdom that commecials were all 5 stud.
    So, three questions.
    1. What's the easiest way to find out what diff is actually fitted & how to confirm the ratio.
    2. What was the original spec on the Ute? 4 or five stud?
    3. Does the Sedan (3.5:1) rear axle, bolt straight into the Ute?

  • Comment by Marty Sanderson on Tuesday, November 09, 2010: Hi Mark.
    Q1.
go to this web page how to check diff ratio, its spot on although its an MG club website & I won't have to type info with one finger..

    http://www.mgparts.co.nz/diff_ratios.html

    Q2. 5 stud.
But any anything could happen to keep production going hey, especially with an XP commercial that perhaps came out late in the run when the XR was about to come out.
(my 1979 XC Panel Van is very much like that also)
Quick story in 1962 my neighbour worked for Ford & the first CKD kits for the Compact Fairlaine used Falcon Ute/Van 13inch rims because the 14 inch wheels were not ready.

    3. You can swap in complete rear assembly very easily seeing as how your car has a compatible 4 stud front end.
(Why not go looking for 3.2:1 Fairmont Diff, harder to come by but still might be around somewhere, I've had a few pass through my hands over the years.)
You can change your rolling diameter by finding a set of 14 inch 4 stud Fairmont Rims as well, if you keep to drum brakes front & rear 4 stud 14 inch Mustang wheels are the go also - inside you see they are rivited not welded like the Aussie wheel.

If you don't mind I think i'll put your question up for the public to see as a teaser to what lurks behind the door for members.

    Cheers
    Marty (Sec)

  • Comment by Nathan Johnston on Tuesday, November 09, 2010: Lovely looking ute - you don't see that many with the spats (spelling?) around anymore!

  • Comment by Mark Wright on Monday, November 29, 2010: Hi Marty, Thanks for the info, that MG site does give decent instructions.
I think the best option will be to find another rear assembly from a sedan and simply swap them out. Easiest to locate too.
    Cheers
    Mark

  • Comment by Mark Wright on Friday, February 25, 2011: All Done.
Located a 3.5:1 5 stud rear assembly on first call (Thanks Dan Bowden for pointing me to Earlybird Spares in Melbourne). Great price delivered to my door within 2 days.
I had a mate come over & we just figured it out as we went along. This is the first significant work I've done on the Ute & I haven't really done more than tyres, batteries & oil for twenty years, so I was stoked when the test run was perfect.
Next step is to swap out the speedo cable (driven) gear. I'm told it's about a 15 minute job. Not sure how many teeth gear to get. Mark & Danny at Earlybird have all six types, so I should be OK.
Anyway, I'm back on the road and can keep up with traffic now.
    Cheers
    Mark

    XM DRAG CAR

Sunday, October 31, 2010 by Marty Sanderson
POP on to youtube to have a look at this.

I think I saw this car on Bris 31 TV last year, but since the tele has gone digital we can't get the station or it's shows anymore.
Murray O'Connor is the driver & my hero for this week. (Along with Robbie DEANS for delivering a Wallabies win over the All Blacks)

Sent to me today by a great friend of the club Tiago Couto Bicalho at a club day he attended last week-end at Belo Horizonte city, Tiago owns the green F-Truck in the photos.
If you haven't met Tiago when he has been in Australia I've gotta say he is a terrific bloke, out of the blue about 10 or 11 years ago he just rang up said he was in Brisbane to improve his English, owned an F-truck back in Brazil liked old cars and would we like to meet.
